Charles Whitehead

     Charles Whitehead was born in 1871 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of ... Whitehead. The Whitehead family owned a large woollen business and were the major producer of umbrella cloth, The family firm was called Briggs Brothers and Co. By 1890 they had developed a considerable business with Russian merchants and this led to the establishment of a factory in Poland to service the Russian Market.2,3 Charles went with two of his uncles to build a mill in Warsaw, then part of Russia.2 He married Eleanora Wedel.3 He was born When hitler invaded, Charles' sons enlisted: one joined the East Yorks Regiment and was killed in action in 1943; another was with the Polish Air Force at Northolt before joining Yeo-Thomas, 'The White Rabbit' as an S.O.E. Officer with the Free French 'RF' Section gaining the Military Cross and Croix-de-Guerre.

Another, having escaped from Russian captivity following their invasion of Poland on 17 September 1939, came to Scotland, then returned as an S.O.E. Officer to Warsaw and took part in the Warsaw Rising of 1944: then spending 4 years in a Soviet Gulag.

Another son was with the Polish Forces in the West as an Offcier in the Army. Pf those remaining in Poland throughout the War, Charles jnr operated an escape line for Allied Servicemen, and worked with the Underground: a reference is made by Ernest Bevin in Hansard on 5 November 1947 to the part played by Charles Whitehead Snr and Jnr in the Warsaw Rising and their commendations.2 He died on 9 September 1947 in Newcroft, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at the house of his sister Lucy suddenly. The Communists gave his widow wo days to vacate her two romomed apartment in Warsaw.4 He was buried on 13 September 1947 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in Plot 871.5

He was baptised on 1 April 1895 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, his father was a labourer.2 He was the son of Frank Longhurst and Kate Longhurst in the 1901 census in Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Frank Longhurst and Kate Longhurst in the 1911 census in Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England. James was a domestic gardener.4 James enlisted into the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) 25th Battalion on 19 January 1915 in Guildford. His army number was 18070.5,6 He died on 1 November 1918 in France at age 24.5,6 He was buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouan, France, in grave S II JJ 28.5 James appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.

Henry was an agricultural labourer and carter living with his wife and children. They had a lodger George Arnold who was 17 and a farm labourer.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Binstead Street, Binstead, Hampshire, England. Henry was a carter for farmer living with his wife and children.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Netham Hill, Alton, Hampshire, England. Henry was a farm carter living with his wife and chiildren. They had 11 children, one of whom had died before 1911 and theiy lived in a four roomed home.5 His wife Agnes died in 1915 in Frensham, Surrey, England.6 He married Ethel Louise Stideford on 7 February 1920 in St Mary the Virgin, Frensham, Surrey, England, aftre the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Edith Ellen Gillen and William Albert Wilkinson. Henry a widower was a farm carter from Frensham, his father William was a deceased farm labourer. Ethel came from Hemel Hempstead's father John Nicholas was also deceased and a blacksmith.7,8 He died in 1947 in Alton, Hampshire, England.9

     Henry Thomas Gillen was born on 11 April 1894 in Wonersh, Surrey, England, he was the twin of Edith Ellen.1,2 He was the son of Henry Gillen and Agnes Ellen Booker. He was baptised on 1 July 1894 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with his twin sister Ellen.3 He was the son of Henry Gillen and Agnes Ellen Gillen in the 1901 census in Binstead Street, Binstead, Hampshire, England.4 He was the son of Henry Gillen and Agnes Ellen Gillen in the 1911 census in Netham Hill, Alton, Hampshire, England. Thomas was an under carter on a farm.5 He married Elizabeth Katurah Smith on 30 March 1918 in St Mary the Virgin, Frensham, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Jennie Smith and John Hudson White. Henry was a Corporal RGA from Frensham, his father was a carter. Elizabeth lived in Kilburn and her father Thomas William a printer.6 Henry signed up on 11 April 1921 into the Queens Royal Defence Force. His complexion was fresh, his hair brown, with hazel eyes and he had a scar on his third finger on his left hand. He was 5 foot 9 inches tall and had a chest measurement of 36 inches.2 When Henry signed up into the army in 1921 he gave his home address with his wife as Furze Hill Cottage, Churt.2 Henry enlisted for 1 year on 5 July 1921 in Guildford into Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, he was a carter. He served previously for over 6 years no 528442.7 Henry was discharged from the army on 4 April 1922.2,7 He died in 1962 in Surrey, England.8
