     Edward Joseph Hawkins was born in 1880 in Colchester, Essex, England, his father was serving in the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment and stationed in Colchester.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Edward Hawkins and Elizabeth J ... He was the son of Joseph Edward Hawkins and Elizabeth J Hawkins in the 1881 census in 5 Arthur Terrace, Arthur Street, Colchester, Essex, England.3 He was the son of James Edward Hawkins and Elizabeth J Hawkins in the 1891 census in 6 Diamond Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4 He was the son of Elizabeth J Hawkins in the 1911 census in 6 Diamond Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Edward was a domestic gardener.5 Sapper Edward Joseph Hawkins died on 30 July 1916 killed by a trench mortar, death being practically instantaneous. He had served through the Boer war, and previous to enlisting in The Queen's was working at the Chilworth Powder Mills. Later he was transferred to the Royal Engineers. He had been at the front line nearly two years. His sister who lived in Wonersh received the official notification of his death.2,6 Edward is commemorated on in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery, Noeux-les-Mines, France.2 Edward also appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.

     Francis Albert Coleman was born in 1892 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was baptised on 11 September 1892 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Albert George Coleman and Lucy Marian Pearce. He was the son of Albert George Coleman and Lucy Marian Coleman in the 1901 census in Tankards (Shop), Wonersh, Surrey, England.3,4 He was the son of Albert George Coleman and Lucy Marian Coleman in the 1911 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England. Francis was a domestic gardener.5,4 He died on 1 July 1916 in France at age 23 at the Battle of Albert, the first day of the Battle on the Somme. He was a Private in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment. His number was G/1362.6 He was buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Picardie, France, in Plot: III. O. 2.6 A memorial service for Francis was held on Sunday afternoon 6 August 1916 in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh. He had lived all his life in Wonersh. He had been a member of the Choir from a boy, a bell ringer, a member of the Fire Brigade, and also, before enlisting, a special constable. He was one of the first to join the new Army in August 1914.7 Francis name appears in Bramley War Memorial, Bramley, Surrey, England. Francis also appears on the plaque.

Albert was a printer compositor living with three servants.4 He married Lucy Marian Pearce, daughter of Shadrick Lano Pearce and Alice Hansford, in 1891 in Weymouth, Dorset, England, Lucy was a school mistress and had to give up teaching when she married as only single ladies could be teachers.5,6 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Tankards (Shop), Wonersh, Surrey, England. Albert was a grocer, printer and compositor at the Surrey Advertiser living with his wife, three children and sister in law Annie Elizabeth Pearce. There is some confusion with the names of Winifred supposedly 9 months and Elsie who was just that age. I believe Winifred was staying with her Uncle Henry Smallbone.7,6 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England. Albert was a compositor printer at the Surrey Advertiser living with his wife, children and sister in law.8,6 He witnessed the marriage of Edgar Walter Jelley and Winifred Alice Coleman on 18 May 1929 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England.9,10 He witnessed the marriage of Arthur William Luxford and Elsie Marian Coleman on 12 April 1930 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England.11,9 He died on 29 January 1949 in Oakhurst, Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England, his usual address was 26 Hurst View, Birtley Road, Bramley.12,13 He was buried on 2 February 1949 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England.14 His estate was probated on 10 May 1949 in London to Arthur William Luxford a garage proprietor. His effects were valued at £2567 14s 5d.13

Winifred was a dressmaker.3,4 She married Edgar Walter Jelley, son of William Benjamin Jelley and Eliza Jane Ellis, on 18 May 1929 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by the fathers Albert George Coleman and William Benjamin Jelley. Edgar was a carpenter and his father a plumber while Winifred's father was a compositor.5,6 Her husband Edgar died in June 1980 in Surrey, England.7 She died in December 1983 in Surrey, England, at age 89.8

Reginald was a hall boy.5,4 Reginald returned from the front with his right arm bandaged and in a splint and using a walking stick. He had apparently been shot with a poisoned bullet.4 He married Winifred Christine B Ardley in 1925 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England.6 He died on 21 December 1963 in King George V Hospital, Hambledon, Surrey, England, at age 67 his usual address was Maern, Birtley Rise, Bramley.7,8 His estate was probated on 3 April 1964 in London to his widow Winifred. Elise is misenumerated as Winifred her sister, who I believe was staying with their Uncle Henry Smallbone.4,5 She was the daughter of Albert George Coleman and Lucy Marian Coleman in the 1911 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England. Elsie was at school.6,5 She married Arthur William Luxford, son of James Luxford and Emily Redman, on 12 April 1930 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Albert George Coleman and Thomas Bentley. Arthur was a motor engineer, his father James was a Cleaver. Elsie's father was a printer.7,8 Arthur and Elsie are listed as moving from the Garage in Birtley Road in 1937 to living in Oakhurst, Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England.9 Her husband Arthur died in July 1984 in Surrey, England.10,11 She died in August 1989 in Surrey, England, at age 89.12

     Wilfred Luke Covey was born in 1893 in Godalming, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Luke Covey and Jane Doick.2 He was the son of Luke Covey in the 1901 census in Great House Cottages, Hambledon, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Luke Covey and Jane Covey in the 1911 census in Woodyers Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Wilfred was a domestic gardener.4 Wilfred enlisted on 24 November 1915 in Cobham into Public School Corps giving his address as Corea Cottage in Cobham. His occupation was a gardener, five foot 8½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33 ½ inches, weighing 120 lbs. His hair was black, with dark brown eyes, a fresh complexion and a scar on the back of his neck. He gave his father as his next of kin, he was living in 10 Lawnsmead in Wonersh.5 On 25 November 1915 Wilfred joined the Territorial Army Reserves and was posted to the 11th Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment on 25 February 1916.5 Wilfred was put on a ship at Outreau in France bound for England suffering from shrapnel wounds to his left leg.5 He died on 7 August 1916 in Edmonton Hospital, Edmonton, London, England, at 10:40pm. He was Private, 11th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal WestSurrey Regiment). Army no. G/720. His parents and three of his siblings were living at 10 Lawnsmead, Wonersh, Arthur was in Woodford, Essex.6,7,5 He was buried on 11 August 1916 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, following a service in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh. Representatives of the Queen's Regiment acted as bearers and at the graveside the Last Post was sounded by Drummer Schacht and Trumpeter Coyne. He was buried in Blackheath cemetery plot 117 and appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist Church.6,8 Wilfred's father Luke received Wilfred's British War medal on 15 December 1920 and his Victory medal on 10 July 1921.5 The funeral was reported fully in the Surrey Advertiser on 14 August 2016.9

Luke was a labourer and his father Jesse a shepherd. Jane's address was All Saints Landport and her father Walter was a labourer.3,4,5 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Great House Cottages, Hambledon, Surrey, England. Luke was a carter living with his wife and three children.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Woodyers Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Luke was a carter on the farm lliving with his wife and children.7 Luke and Jane were living in 10 Lawnsmead in August 1916 when their son Wilfred died from his wounds in Edmonton Hospital.8 Wilfred's father Luke received Wilfred's British War medal on 15 December 1920 and his Victory medal on 10 July 1921.9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Luke was listed as living at 10 Lawnsmead, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his wife Jane.
