     George Henry Allen died on 27 November 1941 Was he Aircraftman 2nd Class with a service number 1274127. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in106 Squadron.1 G H Allen was listed as one of the bellringers at Wonersh who lost their lives in WW2. He was a member of the Guildford Diocesan Guild.2 George's name appears on the roll of honour in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh.3 He was maybe buried in Guildford Cemetery, Guildford, Surrey, England, in Block G. Grave 325.1

     William George Bishop was born on 30 May 1913 in Guildford, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of David Henry Bishop and Agnes Harrison.2 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register William George Bishop was listed as living at 1 Aston Villas, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his parents William was a postman and volunteered for the St Johns Ambulance.3 He died on 11 July 1944 at age 31 William was in the 9th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was Private 13048197.2 He was buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Bayeux, Normandy, France, The Bayeux War Cemetery is the largest Second World War cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, located in Bayeux, Normandy. The cemetery contains 4,648 burials, mostly of the Invasion of Normandy.2 William's name appears on the roll of honour in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh.

Peter Nesbitt Medd

     Peter Nesbitt Medd was born in 1913 in Epsom, Surrey, England, Peter served in the Royal Navy HMS Peewit.1 He was the son of Allan Nesbitt Medd and Jane Adele Vaughan Thomas. Allan and Jane and their children Cecily, Allan and Richard were living at The Woodlands, Agales, Lane in Ashford in Surrey when young Allan died just aged 7 years.2 Peter was a cadet from 1 September 1930 and was on HMS Rodney a battleship on the Home Front from 6 Setember. He was promoted a midshipman on 1 May 1931 and to A/S Lieutenant on 1 September 1933, then S. Lt on 1 January 1934. He served as 1st Lieutenany on HMS Doon, a fishery protection gunboat trawler. He attended a promotion course on HMS Victory in Portsmouth on 9 April 1934, rising to a Lt on 1 August 1935. He was a pilot in S/R Squadron 822 FAA on HMS Furious, an aircraft carrier in the Reserve Fleet attached to the RAF.3 Peter was in the Fleet Air Arm in Augst 1939 and in April 1940 a pilot on HMS Warspite a battleship. He was shot down in his reconnaissance off Tobruk and became a POW in Italy. He escaped and was promoted on 1 August 1943 to Lt Cdr and then on 5 January he was Commanding Officer 769 Squadron FAA on HMS Peewit RN Air Station, East Haven in Angus.. He had landing training at HMS Ravager an escort carrier and later hMS Khedive another escourt carrier in June 1944.3 Peter was in 731 Squadron FAA back on HMS Peewit in RN Air Station in East Haven, Angus.3 He died on 19 August 1944 Peter was killed in action when his Hawker Sea Hurricane Mk XIIA (BW855) flew into high ground in midst whilst flying from Sealand to RNAS in East Haven. He was awarded the MBE which was presented to his next of kin.4,3 He was buried in Western Cemetery, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland, The grave reference is Compt. D. North Border, Grave 23. and he appears on the roll of honour in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh with his brother.5,4,3

     Allan Nesbitt Medd was born on 16 August 1878 in North Cerney, Gloucestershire, England.1,2 He was the son of Peter Goldsmith Medd and Louisa Nesbitt. He was the son of Peter Goldsmith Medd and Louisa Medd in the 1881 census in The Rectory, North Cerney, Gloucestershire, England.3 He was the son of Peter Goldsmith Medd and Louisa Medd in the 1891 census in The Rectory, North Cerney, Gloucestershire, England.4 He received the probate of the estate of Peter Goldsmith Medd on 27 August 1908.56 He married Jane Adele Vaughan Thomas in 1911 in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England.7 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Inglenook, Skinners Lane, Ashtead, Surrey, England. Allan was a Public Wharfinger of hides and skins living with his wife, servant and a visitor young Arthur Potter aged 10 years. They appeared to stay at this address until at least 1914. Wharfinger was a term for a person who was the keeper or owner of a wharf. The wharfinger takes custody of and is responsible for goods delivered to the wharf, typically has an office on the wharf or dock, and was responsible for day-to-day activities including slipways, keeping tide tables and resolving disputes.8,6 He received the probate of the estate of Walter Hardy Nesbitt on 27 March 1913.5 Allan and Jane and their children Cecily, Allan and Richard were living at The Woodlands, Agales, Lane in Ashford in Surrey when young Allan died just aged 7 years.9 Allan and Jane were listed as living in Four Gables, The Street, Wonersh from 1927 certainly until Jane's death in 1946.6 He received the probate of the estate of Louisa Medd on 10 October 1928.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Allan was listed as living at Four Gables, The Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his wife Jane. Allan was listed as working as a Public Wharfinger Manager and was a Special Constable, Section Leader in A Division. Jane like many women was listed as unpaid domestic duties.2 His wife Jane died on 24 October 1946 in Four Gables, The Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5,10 He received the probate of the estate of Jane Adele Vaughan Medd on 19 March 1948.5 He died on 15 January 1962 in Bromyard Hospital, Linton, Herefordshire, England, at age 83 his usual address was Delamere House, Tedstone, Delamre, near Bromyard.11,9,5 He's ashes were buried on 19 January 1962 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 997 following a service in St John the Baptist in Wonersh.9 His estate was probated on 27 April 1962 in London to Cicely King Lewis widow, Edward Nesbitt Medd a retired Solictor and Robert Tate Medd a retired engineer. His effects were valued at £7,659 14s 6d.5

     Charles Frederick Edward Pullen was born in 1920 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of William Ernest Pullen and Harriett May Ffoulkes. He died on 25 November 1941 Able Seaman P/SSX 32151 Charles was in the Royal Navy on board H.M.S. Barham. A salvo of torpedoes from a German submarine struck from close range on HMS Barham in the Mediterranean. Within four minutes, the battleship had listed over to Port and the ships magazines had exploded, sinking the battleship and killing 863 men. Charles is commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 49, Column 1.2

     Donald Walter Tagg was born on 28 February 1917 in Ocala, Florida, USA.1,2 He was the son of Walter Thomas Tagg and Oive Kate Attfield. Donald was a very good musician and played the accordian.3 Donald and Charles lived in 1938. Having lost both parents they were very close in Florida, Stoke Road, Guildford, Surrey, England.4 He married Eleanor Winifred Chitty, daughter of Charles Chitty and Edith Mary Rice, in 1938 in Surrey, England.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Donald was listed as living at Ocala, New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his wife Eleanor. Donald was a bakers van driver his wife Eleanor was a Bookeeper (Grocer). I understand Donald bought Ocala in New Road for £350.6,3 Donald enlisted into Queen´s Royal West Surrey on 15 March 1940 as a Gunner. He later transferred to be a Gunner 6094981 in the Royal Artillery 135 (The Hertfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment the same Regiment as his brother.7 Donald was initially reported as missing He had been captured by the Japanese on 15 February 1942 with his brother Charles Floyd Tagg, they were interred in Malai camp in Thailand. Donald's wife Eleanor it seems was not informed until 7 January 1943. She was relieved to have news and judging by the way the POWs were treated in Wonersh she thought he would be safe.3 Two postcards received from Donald while he was a POW.3 He died on 30 July 1943 in Ocala, New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 26 from malnutrition.8,4,9 He was buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, with grave reference 8. G. 43 and number 167.9 Donald is remembered in St Saviours in Guildford, he sang in the choir there prior to enlisting. He is also on the plaque in St John the Baptist church in Wonersh.3 His estate was probated on 28 October 1947 in London to his brother Charles Floyd Tagg. His effects were valued at £737 15s 8d.4

     Walter Eric Enticknap was born on 26 June 1906 in Guildford, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Edward Tidy Enticknap and Emma Mary James. He was the son of Edward Tidy Enticknap and Emma Mary Enticknap in the 1911 census in Bell Fields, Guildford, Surrey, England.3 Walter was a chorister at St Nicolas Church in Guildford and learned to love bell ringing. His first peal was a three hour stint at the age of 16 in 1922.4 He married Elsie Ermyntrude Hammond, daughter of Benjamin Thomas Hammond and Gertrude Mary Bond Murton, on 20 May 1929 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Benjamin Thomas Hammond and Edward James Enticknap. Walter gave his address as 3 Sparkes Row, Park Street in Guildford. His father Edward ws a Gardener. Elsie lived in Wonersh and her father Benjamin Thomas Hammond was also a Gardener.5,6 After Walter and Elsie moved to Wonersh Walter joined St John the Baptist church as a chorister, bellringer, church warden and member of the Parochial Church Council. He also helped at Shalford Church. He belonged to the village gardening and bowls clubs, winning the Haslam Challenge Cup for bowling for the club for two years in the 1930s.4 Walter and Elise are recorded as living in Great Tangley Cottage in Wonersh on the electoral lists of 1930-1937.7 During the war Walter was exempted from military service because of the importance of his job, as a bus driver, and instead became a Sergeant in the Home Guard.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Walter Eric Enticknap was listed as living at Head Gardeners Cottage, Great Tangley Manor, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his parents in law Walter was a Public Service Vehicle Driver, living with his wife.8 His wife Elsie died on 24 March 1987 in Surrey, England.9,10 Walter rang a quarter peal to mark his 84th birthday in St John the Baptist, Wonersh.4 He died on 16 October 1990 in Surrey, England, at age 84.11,4 His body was cremated in Guildford Crematorium, Godalming, Surrey, England, after a funeral service in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh.12 The ashes of Elsie and Walter are buried in St John the Baptist graveyard.10

     Gertrude Mary Bond Murton was born on 8 March 1882 in Haddiscoe, Norfolk, England.1,2 She was the daughter of William Murton and Esther Jane Cunnolds.1 She was the daughter of William Murton and Esther Jane Murton in the 1891 census 9 Lawnsmead, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 She appeared in the 1901 census in Dower House, Wonersh, Surrey, England. She was the house parlour maid.4 She married Benjamin Thomas Hammond, son of Thomas Hammond and Elizabeth Walker, on 27 June 1901 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Philip Longhurst and Harry H Bond. Benjamin was a Gardener and his father Thomas a labourer, Gertrude's father William was deceased.5,6 She was the daughter of Esther Jane Murton in the 1911 census in 2 Diamond Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England.7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Gertrude was listed as living at Head Gardeners Cottage, Great Tangley Manor, Wonersh, Surrey, England with her husband Benjamin. He was the grandson of Esther Jane Murton in the 1911 census in 2 Diamond Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4 He witnessed the marriage of Hilda Mary Mercer and Thomas William Hammond on 6 June 1927 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5 He married Ada Florence Kimber on 8 April 1928 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Charles Henry Chewter and Thomas William Hammond. Geoffrey was an omnibus driver and his father Benjamin a gardener. Ada's father George Stephen Kimber was a farmer and deceased.6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Geoffrey was listed as living at Lane End, Blackheath Lane, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his wife Ada. The eremony was witnessed by John Cootes and Frances Ada Enticknap. Henry was a soldier in 78/11 Field Brigade R A Waterloo Barracks in Aldershot. His father was a joiner called Jeremiah Talor. Eunice was described as being home duties and she lived in 3 Sparkes Terrace Park Street, her father was a Gardener.5,6 She died in 1989 in Surrey, England.7
